How a Light Bulb Can (Almost) Ruin Your Company 💡

It all started out quite innocently. That simple light bulb on the ceiling was finally going to become a lamp that actually gave off some light. You know how it is: annoying, but no big deal, right? So I grabbed a ladder, screwed in the new bulb – and then, bam! The fuse blew. Darkness. Silence. But the darkness isn’t half as bad until you realize: Our NAS (that brand-new thing we’d bought a few weeks ago) was also hooked up to that fuse. And when the fuse was back in, our NAS was in digital agony – turned off, encrypted, no chance of accessing it anymore. At first we thought, “Okay, we’ll fix this right away.” But then came the shock: The file with our passwords? Exactly – of course it’s on the NAS. And with it, access to:

  • Accounting software.
  • Bank accounts.
  • Servers.
  • Contracts and tax documents. Everything gone. Completely. The new NAS, which was supposed to be our safety net, had catapulted us into digital isolation. That moment when you realize: “Maybe that backup generator wasn’t such a bad idea after all.” Days of puzzling and frantic Googling followed. No backup, no clear strategy – we were so sure nothing could go wrong. And then, salvation: We’d created a backup after setting up the NAS, but we’d simply forgotten it existed. So a smart idea from back then ended up saving our *** after all! The office is lit up again, and we have access to our data. But one thing is clear: **This must never happen to us again.** What we learned from this:
  • Backups are like insurance. No one thinks about them until you really need them. And by then, it’s often too late.
  • Backup strategy: Store data redundantly – not just on a NAS. Ideally, a mix of: _ Local backups (e.g., hard drives). _ Cloud solutions. * Offsite backups. Have you ever experienced a “lightbulb crisis” like this? How do you handle data protection and backups?
